![]() We begin 2006 in Savusavu, Fiji, a small town on the island of Vanua Levu. Tucked way back into Savusavu Bay and then up Nakamo Creek. Good thing we have a paddle! It's known as one of the best cyclone holes in Fiji and we're counting on it! The weather is about 90° F during the days, dropping to a cool 82° F most nights. It rains at least once a day, and now that it's cyclone season, even more! ![]() ![]() |
We are becoming locals here in Savusavu. Aside from the local Fijian community, there is a small community of cruisers who have made Savusavu their permanent home and about six or seven others, like us, who plan to stay through the cyclone season. Most Fijians speak English and we are picking up a few Fijian words and phrases. The population is made up about half and half of native Fijians and Fijians of Indian descent. Savusavu's population is heavy on the native Fijian side. The Indian population speaks Hindustani, mostly. That language is a little more difficult and as the Indian population itself seems more reserved, we may not pick up too much of that! The food here is delicious. Most of the restaurants are run by Indians and that means excellent curry dishes. We love curry! Mutton curry, lamb curry, chicken curry, vegetable curry...... We took a class and learned how to make our own curry. There's also a place called Mo's Burgers that serves hamburgers, fries and chocolate shakes for a taste of home sometimes. ![]() We are staying tucked in and on our mooring right now, as there are weather fronts that could turn cyclonic in the area. We've heard that aside from a few periods like this, we will be able to get in some good sailing during the season. Meanwhile, we are spending a lot of time with our new friends, Ima and Vili, learning first hand about the Fijian way of life. Moce, Jim and Barb |
